An Innovative Approach to Resume Building at HSU Career Services

January 23, 2025

At Hardin-Simmons University (HSU), a wave of innovation is sweeping through Career Services, one that promises to revolutionize the way students prepare for their futures.

A new tool, SkillsFirst, has been introduced to campus and is quickly becoming a game-changer for students navigating the job market.

SkillsFirst is not just another resume builder. It is an AI-powered platform that works behind the scenes, offering students a comprehensive suite of tools designed to optimize their resumes, align them with specific job postings, and help them navigate their career paths with precision and confidence.

“I saw SkillsFirst as an essential addition to our university because students today are balancing numerous responsibilities with limited time,” said Nick Edwards, Guided Pathways Career Advisor for HSU Academic Affairs. “Recognizing the challenges of securing in-person resume reviews and career guidance, I introduced SkillsFirst to our campus as a solution that meets students where they are.”

Edwards shared the tool bridges the gap between academic success and industry expectations by providing an accessible, AI-powered platform that helps students not only craft their resumes but also optimize and tailor them for specific job descriptions.

“Offering this resource, which works around students’ busy schedules, empowers them to present their skills effectively, greatly increasing their chances of securing job offers.” Said Edwards.

Edwards has already seen success utilizing the tool with students landing internships and job offers. Because of this success, HSU Career Services was recognized as a  SkillsFirst AI Excellence in Customization and Optimization Award recipient – spotlighting HSU as having made significant strides in enhancing job search processes and career preparedness through AI technology.

“I’m excited about the potential for AI tools like SkillsFirst to transform our career services and improve student outcomes. I encourage students, faculty, staff, and alumni to fully embrace these resources and stay proactive in their career development,” said Edwards.
